Does Marital Counseling Work?

Marital counseling is a tool that can help couples currently experiencing marriage problems. By attending counseling, couples can learn to understand each other better. It also helps with resolving conflicts and improving the relationship.

Marital counseling is often facilitated by licensed marriage counselors or couple therapists. Some of these counselors and therapists offer services to check the couple’s mental health, but their main focus is on the relationship of the couple.

Some of the reasons why marriages become troubled, or why conflicts and problems start to arise between couples are pride, lying, emotional wounds, mental conditions and pornography.

Marriage counseling can be short term or long term. Short term marriage counseling can take two to three sessions and this is applicable to those couples who at an early age of encountering marital problems decided to see a counselor. While long term counseling takes about twelve to twenty-four sessions and is applicable to those who ignored that their marriage was having problems. But that doesn’t mean that short term counseling is more effective than long term counseling. Saving a marriage will always depend on the couples.

During the marriage counseling sessions, the counselor is talking to the couple, but the counselor is not the only one who talks here. Couples are often asked to talk about their marriage, what happened to their marriage and what they think are the reasons they are encountering marital problems and conflicts. From the couple’s statements, the counselor analyzes their problems. From there, couples will be told what happened to their relationship and the factors affecting the marital peace and what they must do to save the marriage.

The counselor’s main duty is to help couples resolve their conflicts and help them improve their relationship. If couples want to save and improve their relationship, they should at least try to apply certain skills to their relationship. These skills include having an open communication, being honest, solving problems together and discussing differences. Lack of communication is the number one reason why relationships don’t work out the way couples want it to. Some people tend to just keep to themselves how they really feel to avoid misunderstandings. They don’t understand that one day everything that was kept a secret will burst out and will surely put an end to the relationship.

Marital counseling is a great help to couples who want to improve their relationships and build more intimacy. Any couple can seek marital counseling even if they don’t really have marital problems. Couples who don’t go through marriage counseling often end up in a divorce. Divorce is a good thing if things can’t be compromised. But saving a marriage is always something that couples should fight for. So once marital problems and conflicts occur, see a counselor to easily mend the relationship.
